So I spend god knows how long looking for a good youtube dancer of Tokaikko Junjou on youtube.
It proved to be quite an impossible task. I came across some okay, some bad, and some just plainly terrible. I was at the point where I wanted to give up on Tokaikko entirely.
Some of the ...ehm ones I came across on my search:
Okay so I'm going to give a quick short review of the last one I posted.
The girl in the green.
I know it might seem incredibly rude of me... but although the name says practice, and practice does not mean the final product, I simply would not put that video up on youtube, I would be too embarassed. I would try harder to learn the choregoraphy first of all, second I would try and make it look good. This dance only looks good if you know it step by step, and this is ovbiously what it looks like when you don't.
If you're reading this green shirt girl I'm pretty sorry..
Overall, this performance is pretty bad, but I do appreciate the effort. Not everyone has it in them to post a dance of tokaikko.
No wait, they do.
2/10.
So when I had given up, I slept on it. Then I woke up and gave it another shot I found one I'm surprised I hadn't looked at before:
LunaCherry, you have answered my prayers.
This has to be the best Tokaikko dance on youtube, the only person coming close is Majorie but I have already reviewed her.
Anyways, the only flaw I could find with this dance was at the beginning, she looked kind of awkward. I would suggest sticking with Maimi's part, so she has an excuse to stand there. Also, I don't think its her fault, but at the dancey bit after the beginning, her arm didn't seem to go out far enough.
Anyways, I admire her stamina. She obviously put it all into this dance, being so energetic that it was just fun to watch. I couldn't see her facial expression well because of the camera quality, so I cannot really comment on that. From what I could see though, her expression seemed to fit the mood of the song.
One thing I really like though, is her outfit. Its incredibly cute. I want it.
I only seem to have a lot to say about a dance when I don't like it.
So I think I will focus on a dance I don't like next.
Now, I'm going to have a try at one of youtubes favorites-
Massara Blue Jeans- Kyaaakya
http://youtube.com/watch?v=NKK5vGawU5w (youtube for some reason is not working through vox, I will edit the video into the post as soon as it starts to work)
Okay so, I have a few things to say about this dance, some good some bad.
The first thing I notice is that Sasha is a dancer with very natural talent. She seems extremely able to do the hard parts of the dances that perhaps some people cannot accomplish. She handles the choreography well and makes it obvious that she's not just some girl who is cute and knows the routine.
Massara Blue Jeans is a fun dance to do. It involves some comical moves like the very famous "Love me, Love me, Love me, Love me." thrusts that were an automatic favorite to almost everyone who saw the dance. Sasha, I noticed, did not put any enthusiasm into this part of the dance; she did not even attempt the thrusts. That is completely understandable; in america, pelvic thrusts aren't as ...respected.. as they are in Japan. So obviously, she could feel uncomfortable. I just think that the thrusts make the mood of the dance, and the dance loses character when they are missing. One thing I would suggest for Sasha is to try and feel more comfortable doing the dance. At first I felt extremely stupid doing the thrusts but eventually I got comfortable.
To end that semi-negative point with a positive point, I think that the dance didn't come close to boring me despite the lack of pelvic thrusts. Although her facial expression is kind of hard to see, you can tell she wasn't making a bored expression. I didn't see any singing along, but at least the expression was not completely monotone.
I'm really sorry for the negative comments, but I have to say; the one thing that I did not like about this dance was that her posture seemed stiff during most of the dances. I did not see her move her back very much, that made some parts of the dance look pretty awkward.
Sasha has obviously put a lot of effort into knowing the choreography of this dance. She knows the dance move by move; but she also does the switching between members during the bridge. It makes the dance seem a little off too in my opinion. But I feel extremely comfortable saying that she knows the dance extremely well and there are only a few parts of the dance that do not look right for me.
Overall rating- 6/10
In short.
It's well done, but it could be a lot better. It's a slight dissappointment in comparison to other videos by the same dancer. However, I am extremely fond of how well she does the dance and the fact that she's extremely cute so she suits these dances well.
I couldn't think of a cool title, so I decided to give it like a james bond feel..
Anyways I've decided to kick off a new series. I guess it's a promotion series. My intent is to find some of the best Hello! Project/JPOP dancers on youtube and critique them.
And so, to kick of the series, I'm going to show you one of my personal favorites.
Kokoro no Tamago- MajikuruMaChan2
Kokoro no Tamago is not necessarily a hard dance, it's just a lot of memorization and good choregraphy that makes it look good. A lot of people would look silly to attempt this dance. However, Majorie does a great job in learning the steps; and learning them well.
One thing I like is how she seems extremely comfortable doing this dance. Her facial expression is never showing boredom or extreme concentration. She's always smiling and singing(mouthing?) along and making the dance very fun to watch. That is one thing that I don't like to see in about 90% of the other dancers on youtube. Their faces are monotone and kills the overall performance.
The moves have been memorized extremely well. Majorie does not try to make the dance different and I am in extreme favour of that. I do not like it when some dancers put videos of themselves up but the dances are not memorized that well, or they try to make it their own.
One thing I suggest however is to choose one person to be, unless it is a dance that would clearly look bad if you only did one part (ie tokaikko). In this video, she seemed to alternate (seemed to, I'm not exactly sure) in the verses between all of the members. If that can even be considered a flaw, it would be the only flaw in this dance. (ftr, I do not consider it a flaw...)
Good job majorie, I hope to see even more great dances in the future.
